In Los Angeles, coffee shops cluster around downtown offices, college campuses and the main commercial streets of residential neighborhoods, and the independents usually close by mid-afternoon while chains stay open into the evening. Across California, drive-thru coffee stands and kiosks fill the gap in suburbs and along highways, and roasters often sell bags and brewing gear at the counter. Check the listing for hours, whether the cafe takes mobile orders, and its Google rating and recent reviews; parking is easiest at suburban locations, while downtown shops rely on street meters or nearby garages. The design of this shop is extraordinary, tucked away in a cool, quiet courtyard off the main street. The service is impeccable, and sitting at one of the outdoor tables is a wonderful way to enjoy your coffee. As for the drinks, both the regular coffee and the cortado are solid.

I used to work in the coffee industry, so I don’t get surprised by new coffee shops very often. The specialty coffee scene in LA is already so good compared with the rest of the country, so my expectations are usually pretty high. Honestly, I enjoyed just watching these guys make coffee. You can tell they know exactly what they’re doing and actually care about doing it right. If you’ve ever worked in specialty coffee, you’ll know how much goes into making every cup consistent. That’s exactly what I saw here. My heart rate wasn’t cooperating today, so I didn’t want to risk having too much caffeine. But I’ll definitely be back to try their pour-overs and espresso when I’m feeling better.

One of the best coffee shop’s in LA right now. As someone who travels the world for coffee and has visited over 20 coffee shops in Tokyo alone, Loquat Silver Lake is one of the few places in Los Angeles that truly reminds me of Tokyo’s coffee culture. The attention to detail, calm confidence behind the bar, and overall execution here feels legit. You can tell this isn’t just trendy coffee, the baristas actually know their stuff. They’re knowledgeable, passionate, and understand how to properly work with high-end coffees. What impressed me most is how well they execute washed beans, which are honestly much harder to do right. A lot of shops can make funky naturals taste interesting, but clean washed coffees expose everything. Bad extraction, weak milk integration, imbalance, there’s nowhere to hide. Loquat handles them beautifully. The drinks have clarity, sweetness, texture, and you can actually taste the origin characteristics without the coffee becoming overly acidic or harsh. Their setup is serious, the workflow is dialed in, and the quality control is obvious from the first sip. LA needs more coffee shops like this.

Loquat in Silver Lake feels like the kind of coffee shop that was built by people who actually care about the craft, not just the aesthetic. It comes from the same team behind Kumquat and QUAT, with AJ Kim and Scott Sohn building what feels like a very intentional Los Angeles coffee universe, from the original Kumquat in Highland Park to Loquat in Cypress Park and now this beautiful Silver Lake location. I had the Geisha cortado, and it was exactly why I love specialty coffee when it is done right. Delicate, clean, layered, and balanced, with that beautiful Geisha complexity but still enough milk texture to make it feel soft and approachable. You can tell the baristas are seriously trained here. Nothing felt rushed or random. Every movement behind the bar felt precise, from the grind to the pull to the final drink. The setup also tells you a lot. They are using a Modbar, which keeps the bar open and minimal while still giving you that serious espresso quality, and the Weber single dose grinder is the kind of detail coffee people immediately notice. It makes the whole experience feel more dialed in, especially when you are drinking higher-end beans where clarity really matters. T

Somehow even better than their original spot!? This place truly cares about the coffee they serve you, no exceptions. It is so cool to watch them work. The atmosphere is lovely, although this location is a little small inside, it is designed really well. If I lived closer, I’d be broke (I will be back though).
